Smoking increase the risk of Peyronie’s disease

A new study shows a significant correlation between smoking and Peyronie’s disease

According to the results of this study done by a team of Italian urologists, cigarette smoking may be a risk factor to develop Peyronie’s disease. In fact, men who smoke are seven times more likely than nonsmokers to develop Peyronie’s disease.

This number increase with age and the amount of cigarettes smoked per day or the number of packets smoked over the years.

Smoking may be the most important cause for Peyronie’s disease according to the data of the study: “Cigarette smoking as risk factor for Peyronie’s disease” because no important association were observed between cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension or alcohol consumption and Peyronies.

The study was done in the general population on men aged between 50 and 69 years old recruited from 10 doctors in Italy. Their medical history and general health, including smoking habits and risk factors of having a bent penis were throughly researched prior to the study by trained uro-andrologists.

Further research is needed to know if quitting smoking may reduce the risk of developing Peyronie’s disease.

Are you affected by Peyronie’s disease?

Scientific research shows that there are options other than surgery to cure Peyronie’s disease.

Doctors are interested in coming with less intrusive forms of therapy as an alternative to surgery on the penis, which is now very unpopular with both doctors and patients.

Patient insatisfaction after the surgery is very likely due to the pain and mediocre results of penile curvature correction surgery. Most patients are unhappy with the results of the intervention because nearly 100% of patient experience shortening of the penis after the surgery.

As with other scar tissues, when the wound heals and the scar tissue retracts, the penis is pulled deeper into the body, eventually resulting in penile shortening.

Self-administered manual stretching techniques and penis extension devices are currently being studied in clinical trials.

At the moment, several clinical studies point to penis extender as the best treatment to correct penis curvature and prevent the bent from getting worse.

According to Doctor Gontero, the leading Doctor of a study on Peyronie’s disease which was published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine in 2009:

“Overall results with the use of a penis extender were self-reported as “acceptable”, making this minimally invasive treatment modality a potential new treatment option in selected Peyronie’s Disease patients.”

Furthermore, after conducting two case studies, Urologist Wendy Hurn of the British Royal Infirmary, came to the conclusion:

“As patient and doctor discuss the possible treatment options, it is extremely important to exhaustively inform the patient that the treatment with the Andropenis (a brand of penile extender) has to be considered an overall effective and viable treatment.”

Several other studies exist reaffirming these types of results.

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy to treat Peyronie’s disease

New groundbreaking procedure to treat Peyronie’s disease

Peyronie’s disease is the development of abnormal scar tissue inside the penis that causes a bent shape of the penis. Not only do these scar tissues create the curvature of the penis, but it can also lead to erectile dysfunction or flaccidity.

Peyronie’s disease may prevent a man from having sex, and men with Peyronie’s disease often experience stress or anxiety related to this disorder.

Peyronie’s disease is a condition that can be very painful to live with, causing physical pain during erection and lowering your self-esteem.

If you have been diagnosed with Peyronie’s disease, there is a new treatment, called Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), that you could discuss with your doctor. It’s the same procedure that has been used for many years to break gallstones and kidney stones, and it can now be applied to the penis to eliminate the scar tissues (plaques) inside the penis and increase the blood flow.

What is Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy ?

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy is being studied as a treatment of Peyronie’s disease. It works by sending shock waves to the penis that causes microtrauma in soft tissues, creating an increase in blood flow to that area and breaking the plaques (scar tissue) if they are calcified.

ESWT is a standard urologic therapy to disintegrate kidney stones, but it still not approved in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a Peyronie’s disease treatment.

Even though this technique to cure Peyronies lacks scientific evidence, the theory is that ESWT treats other soft tissue conditions, such as plantar fasciitis or lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), so it should act the same way with the penis, increasing blood flow and a healing response when used in the treatment of Peyronie’s disease.

Scientific studies of ESWT

As said before, Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy to treat Peyronie’s disease is still under investigation and is not a widely spread cure to treat a bent penis.

There are only been a few scientific studies done on ESWT, showing partial improvement on penile curvature.

In the study of Hauck, Questionale efficacy of extracorporeal shock wave therapy for Peyronie’s disease: results of a prospective approach, less than 40% of patients reported an improvement of 10% of the bent of their penis. No improvement in the sexual function or rigidity of the penis could be noticed.

” The authors concluded that the efficacy of ESWT for Peyronie’s disease is highly questionable and that a controlled single blind multicenter study is required. ”

Should you treat Peyronies with Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy

We can not recommend Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy yet because of the lack of scientific evidence proving a reduction in penis curve for patient suffering of Peyronie’s disease.

ESWT also have other disadvantages:

  • Improvement of only 10% of the curvature in less than 40% of the patient
  • Painful procedure where shock waves are sent to the penis
  • Repeted treatments are necessary over a period of 16 months
  • Cost thousand of dollars and is not covered by insurance
  • Not widely available, not usually done in the USA
  • No improvement on rigidity of the penis or sexual function
  • No scientific conclusions regarding the safety and efficacy of ESWT as a treatment of Peyronie’s disease

For all these reasons, Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy is NOT a recommended form of treatment for Peyronie’s disease.

Alternative to ESWT to cure Peyronie’s

The only other treatment of Peyronie’s disease, except surgery, that has been clinically proven to work and safe is traction.

The traction of the penis is obtained with a device called a Penis extender. Penis extender was created more than 15 years ago to treat the micropenis condition and works by stretching the penis and applying micro tears in the soft penile tissue.

When the body starts to heal these micro tears, the natural process makes the tissue grow stronger and longer. It’s the same principle as other body modification such as the neck lengthening practices of “Giraffe Women” in Burma and the lip and earlobe stretching practices of certain African tribes

The penis extender device has since been approved as a cure for peyronies and bent penis syndrome for several years. By adding increased traction along one side of the penis, the penis can be steadily straightened with permanent results.

Although this method is not a quick fix with the treatment lasting up to 6 months, traction devices have been shown to have other advantages than straightening the penis, such as making the penis longer and increasing its girth and improving penile blood flow (leading to stronger & straighter erections).

The most recommended Penis Extender is Size Genetics. Read our review of SizeGenetics or go directly to SizeGenetics official website to know more about this form of treatment to cure Peyronie’s disease.

Peyronie’s Treatment Available At Selfridges

Products aimed at male health are generally viewed as taboo and with a high degree of cynicism.

This negative consensus of opinion is fueled by the large array of herbal based penis enlargement pills, patches and creams all offering a solution to quite possibly the oldest male problem – is it possible to increase the size of my penis?

A high majority of male enhancement products that are aggressively promoted on the internet have highly dubious credentials and practically zero chance of success.

Another age old problem that effects many men to a more troublesome degree is Peyronie’s disease – or curvature of the penis.

To date the only effective treatments are penile cosmetic surgery and the use of traction.

More About Peyronies and Available Treatments

Penis enlargement surgery carries a faster potential reward but also carries a higher risk of permanent disfigurement and loss of sensitivity.

The success rate of cosmetic penile surgical operations across the globe is just over 50% so your odds of a successful penis straightening operation are only slightly better than calling a coin toss correctly.

Until now – most products relating to the male genitalia were not available to buy in store. This appears to be changing.

Penis Straightening Device sold in store

The aptly named Wow Willy traction device will go on sale at Selfridges (a large UK based department store) priced at around £250 (420 US$).

wow-willy

This will be first product of its kind available to buy in store anywhere in the world to not only provide a clinically proven and effective way to increase penis length and girth but also correct penile curvature.

Wow Willy Penis Straightener And Enlargement Device

Wow Willy is a patented branded clone of AndroPenis the scientifically produced traction device from Andro Medical. Harley Fit, a health company supplying pioneering products aimed at weight loss and alternative therapy are now entering into what is unknown territory.

Whether a product that carries a high embarrassment factor could be successful via the high street opposed to the anonymity of the internet remains to be seen.

Where To Buy The Wow Willy Penis Straightener

Wow Willy will go on sale around late October 2009 in store at Selfridges in the UK only.

For those who cannot wait or do not have the luxury of living within the UK – or would prefer a more anonymous and potentially less embarrassing purchasing experience, the original Andro Penis device is available via the official Andro Penis website.

The original Andro Penis product, which Wow Willy was based on, has been subject to numerous clinical studies. It is also around $80 cheaper into the bargain.
